I WAS FIRST INTRODUCED TO THE MARTIAL ARTS THROUGH MY COUSIN IN 1966, HE WAS STATIONED IN OKINAWA, STUDIED JUDO AND GOJU RYU

KARATE. LATER I STUDIED ISSHINRYU, BUT NEITHER SYSTEM SUITED ME. WHEN I CAME HOME FROM COLLEGE IN 1972 I FOUND, BY ACCIDENT, THE

CHINESE/INDONESIAN ARTS OF WILLEM REEDERS. MY TEACHER WAS SIFU GARY GALVIN, HE WAS TEACHING CLASSES ON SUNDAY MORNINGS A

BLOCK AWAY FROM MY HOUSE. I MET FRIENDS FROM HIGH SCHOOL AT THE SCHOOL, I WASN'T 120 LBS. SOAKING WET AT THE TIME. AND THEY SAW

AN EASY MARK. BUT THIS SYSTEM SUITED ME, I ADVANCED FASTER THAN ANYONE ELSE, AND CONTINUED ON TILL 1978 WHEN MY TEACH MOVED

TO FLORIDA AND I STARTED MY OWN SCHOOL. I TAUGHT THE SYSTEM FOR A FEW YEARS, THEN I MET A FRIEND IN1985 WHO TAUGHT KEMPO, WE

EXCHANGED SYSTEMS, I MADE 3RD DEGREE BLACK BELT IN 2 YEARS. I KNEW THEN HOW SPECIAL THE SYSTEM I ALREADY HAD BY HOW QUICKLY I

COULD PICK UP ANOTHER STYLE. I REMEMBER PAUL de THOUARS TELLING ME HOW FAST WILLEM REEDERS COULD ABSORB ANOTHER STYLE.

THE KNOWLEDGE I RECEIVED FROM MY ORIGINAL SYSTEM GAVE ME THAT ADVANTAGE.  I RECEIVED MY 5th DEGREE MASTER LEVEL IN 2007 AFTER A

LONG BREAK FROM KEMPO CONCENTRATING ON SILAT AND ARNIS.

                                                                                                                 WILLEM REEDERS "THE RED ANT"

WILLEM REEDERS OF THE ROYAL NETHERLAND NAVY WAS CAPTURED BY THE JAPANESE IN DECEMBER 1941. THE PRISONERS WERE SENT TO

A PRISON CAMP OUTSIDE OF UBON, SIAM. THE CAMP WAS SURROUNDED BY A 10 FT. HIGH BAMBOO FENCE.  LOCALS WOULD THROW FOOD THE

STARVING INMATES OVER THE FENCE. WILLEM HAPPENED TO BE NEAR THE FENCE WHEN A LOCAL TOSSED SOMETHING OVER. WILLEM WAS

TAKEN TO BE QUESTIONED BY A GUARD, HIS HANDS WERE TIED IN FRONT OF HIM AND WAS MADE TO KNEEL ONTO A TRIANGLE SHAPE BOARD TO

INFLICT PAIN DURING THE INTERROGATION. THE LONE SOLDIER APPROACHED WILLEM WITH HIS BAYONET, DROPPING TO HIS SIDE, WILLEM

KICKED THE GUARD TO THE FLOOR, THEN DROPPING A KNEE INTO HIS CHEST. ROLLING THE GUARD OVER HE STRUCK HIM ON THE BACK OF HIS

HEAD AND ESCAPED. WILLEM HEADED SOUTH TO UBON , HE CAME ACROSS A BUDDHIST PRIEST WHO HID WILLEM UNTIL HE COULD GET HIM TO

THE  LOCAL RESISTANCE. WILLEM JOINED THE GUERRILLA ARMY AND SOON WAS GIVEN HIS FIRST MISSION. DRESSED AS A BUDDHIST PRIEST IN

THE YELLOW ROBES AND WEARING GLASSES WILLEM WAS FREE TO TRAVEL WITH LITTLE NOTICE FROM THE JAPANESE.

WILLEM'S FIRST MISSION WAS TO BLOW UP THE BRIDGE OVER THE MENAM RIVER. FIVE OTHER COMMANDO'S WORKED WITH HIM ON THIS

DANGEROUS MISSION. WILLEM APPROACHED THE FIRST GUARD ON THE BRIDGE, BEING DRESSED AS A PRIEST, THE GUARD INVITED HIM FOR A

CUP OF COFFEE. WILLEM TOOK OUT THE GUARD MUCH LIKE THE ONE BACK AT THE PRISON CAMP. WALKING THE LENGTH OF THE BRIDGE HE

APPROACHED THE OTHER GUARD. USING THE BLADE HIDDEN IN HIS ROBE HE SLASHED THE GUARD AND TOSSED HIM OVER THE BRIDGE.

WILLEM BEING A ENGINEER HELPED SET THE CHARGES TO THE BRIDGE, A SMALL TRUCK WITH SOLDIERS IN IT PASSED OVER THE BRIDGE,

WILLEM AND HIS UNIT WAITED UNTIL THE TRAIN ARRIVED AND THEN BLEW THE BRIDGE. THE TRUCK FULL OF SOLDIERS HEARD THE EXPLOSION

AND RETURNED, WILLEM AND THE REST OF THE COMMANDO'S TOOK THEM ALL OUT. THE FIRST MISSION WAS A SUCCESS.  WILLEM REEDERS

AND HIS UNIT BLEW UP MANY MORE BRIDGES BEFORE THE END OF THE WAR.

THE NEXT MAJOR MISSION WAS TO DELIVER MEDICAL SUPPLIES TO A CAMP CALLED "RIN TIN" NEAR THE BURMESE BORDER. RIN TIN WAS THE

NORTH TERMINAL FOR THE RAILROAD TO BURMA. THE CAMPS PRISONERS WERE HOUSED IN TENTS WITH NO FENCES, NOT NEEDED BECAUSE

OF THE DENSE JUNGLE AND ALL THE PRISONERS HAD MALARIA AND TYPHUS. WILLEM HAD QUININE HIDDEN UNDER HIS BUDDHIST ROBE. HE

WAS ABLE TO ENTER THE CAMP FREELY AND DELIVER THE MEDICAL SUPPLIES TO THE DOCTORS. WILLEM BEGAN TO ORGANIZE A MASSIVE

ESCAPE BUT THE WAR ENDED WITH THE JAPANESE. AFTER THE JAPANESE SURRENDERED THERE WEAPONS AT THE CAMP WILLEM CAME OUT OF

HIS BUDDHIST ROBE AND LET THE GUARDS KNOW HE WAS THE INFAMOUS "RED ANT".  THE de THOUARS BROTHERS FATHER WAS AT THE CAMP

WITH WILLEM REEDERS.
